Week 2 Pre-Session Reflection
In response to the Ted Talk by Amory Lovins: A 40 Year Plan for Energy.
"Lovins sounds like a very innovative and exceptional person.
What really resonates with me is the simplicity in which change can come to the system that is currently in place, and the attempt to eliminate coal by 2050.
However, I want to play devil's advocate here.
In theory, it all sounds amazing. Use the efficiency and productivity of private enterprise and empower individuals to enforce change. But that is all it is, theoretical.
Where does this all begin? Who puts these things in place? If the Governments are going to be bypassed, who will champion the cause?
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea and it appears to be viable. But Lovins uses sweeping statements and grand ideas to paint a beautiful future, but who is going to force the issue and how will it begin?"
I feel I may have been too cynical, but sometimes I feel that people, governments and organisations can spout off about what they will do to change the environment and current practices but it is all theoretical. There is no plan. It is all a wonderful vision. While I do appreciate the need for people like Lovins to inform and to force people to think, I can't be a believer until I can see hard planning and hard calls being made. Call me a cynic, but it's easier to talk about it, then it is to actually do it.
