Post Session 3: Critical Review

Critical Review: Week 3

“Why are Rating Schemes always wrong? Regulatory frameworks for passive design and energy efficiency” is a paper by Maria Kordjamshidi, Steve King and Deo Prasad from the Conference on Passive and Low Energy Architecture in Geneva, 2006.

Reflection

As someone without an architectural or engineering background, what I found interesting was the point about psychology.  The paper states that a “regime of restricted daytime air exchange is counter-intuitive for most Sydney people”; implying the people don’t understand the most sustainability-friendly times to open and close windows. It’s an unfortunate reality that not everyone understands concepts of conduction, convection, radiation and ventilation. Perhaps this is why ratings systems on performance will continue to fall short.
